FAQ – Training

What if I’m already fit? Do I have to do Foundations?

  • Do you know what a Sumo-Deadlift-High-Pull is? Can you perfectly execute a snatch? If so, then maybe. People with prior experience in CrossFit movements may be able to jump right into our regular classes. Schedule an appointment with a trainer for evaluation.

Why does it cost so much? XYZ gym only costs me $20/month.

  • CrossFit affiliates are typically priced somewhere slightly higher than a typical commercial gym where you’re on your own, but lower than personal training (usually a lot lower). The cost reflects the personal attention you receive from our coaches in each class you attend, and the programming we tailor to our clients. The CrossFit business model is also based around the idea that we want all of our members to show up regularly and see results, unlike the “globo-gym” that bases it’s pricing on the fact that most clients pay and rarely come in.

Is CrossFit as good as personal training?

  • CrossFit is generally more intense, and real-world functional type exercises than what machine-based personal trainers provide. Our program has been proven to produce faster, more effective results. In the group atmosphere with the stopwatch running, people typically push themselves much harder than they would in any other program. Few people really need or want constant one on one attention, or to have someone change the pins in the machines. Most people find the accountability factor is the main benefit of personal trainers, and our program provides this as well if not better.
  • In a few cases like health trouble, injuries, pro level sport training, there are are benefits to specialist personal training, though we contend that a tailored CrossFit program yields superior results even for these.

Will I/can I get big doing CrossFit? (From Crossfit.com)

  • If you train the WODs hard, and eat right and get lots of sleep, you will definitely gain lean mass, lose fat, and yes, you can build muscle mass with the crossfit protocol. More specifically, according to Coach Glassman,
Here is a hierarchy of training for mass from greater to lesser efficacy:
    1. Bodybuilding on steroids
    2. CrossFitting on steroids
    3. CrossFitting without steroids
    4. Bodybuilding without steroids
The bodybuilding model is designed around, requires, steroids for significant hypertrophy.
The neuroendocrine response of bodybuilding protocols is so blunted that without “exogenous hormonal therapy” little happens.
The CrossFit protocol is designed to elicit a substantial neuroendocrine whollop and hence packs an anabolic punch that puts on impressive amounts of muscle though that is not our concern. Strength is.
Natural bodybuilders (the natural ones that are not on steroids) never approach the mass that our ahtletes do. They don’t come close.
Those athletes who train for function end up with better form than those who value form over function. This is one of the beautiful ironies of training.

I don’t want huge muscles, will CrossFit make me bulky?

  • CrossFitters typically do not appear abnormally bulky, but rather lean and fit. It’s a subjective subject, but we suggest looking through some photos and decide for yourself.
  • Women who are afraid of “bulking up” should read some of these articles:

Can I come to the gym and do my own workouts?

    • Right now, the answer to this is no. Everyone participates in the workout of the day coached by our training staff in a group, or schedules private one on one lessons tailored to their needs. If you’re experienced in training on your own, and have unusual needs or interests, talk to us and we’ll see what can be worked out.
